MLSE Receivers for Narrow-band Optical Filtering

Abstract

We show that maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) permits significantly narrower optical filtering than threshold detection in high spectral efficiency systems. We consider MLSEs using one and two samples/bit, noise correlation, and exact probability densities.
