Abstract

Recent advances in microelectronics have made possible advanced modulation formats, electronic compensation and high-gain FEC. These advances have allowed the commercial introduction of higher bit rate transponders and have also increased the tolerance to channel effects such as filtering and noise. As a result, the requirements on photonic elements and the possible architectures have evolved dramatically.
