Abstract
We review the development of a Watt-level semiconductor quantum-well gain medium based on the slab-coupled optical waveguide (SCOW) concept. Devices realized in the 1.5-μm-wavelength region include semiconductor optical amplifiers, single-frequency lasers, and monolithic and external-cavity mode-locked lasers.
