Abstract
Demand for increasing data rates in long haul, access, and wireless transport will with no doubt rely on the increased capacity and flexibility of coherent optical communications. Development of high performance monolithically integrated coherent receivers will redound in cost reduction and contribute to the widespread use of this technology in all the aforementioned scenarios. In this communication we will review several proposals to increase the performance and lower the cost of monolithically coherent receivers.
