Aging effects on the attenuation coefficient and splice losses in installed submarine optical cables

Abstract

Aging effects in submarine optical cables were evaluated with OTDR measurements along 12 years. Penalties from splice losses were twofold higher than those from fiber attenuation. Cables are expected to last more than 25 years.
