Difficulties Encountered In The Measurement Of Optical Fiber Interconnection Performance

Abstract

Splices and demountable connectors allow for flexibility in the installation and maintenance of optical fiber links and, as such, are indispensable. Permanent joints (i.e. splices) usually have less effect on system performance than rematable joints (i.e connectors), but, in general, they only offer onetime installation. Joints can however profoundly influence system performance and, since both attenuation and fiber bandwidth are affected, they warrant careful study.
