Abstract

This paper reviews the more important IEC and CCITT activities and standards in the area of fiber optics for telecommunication systems applications. The proposals currently receiving attention are highlighted, and the work and studies in progress are discussed. Areas where agreement has been achieved are outlined. The paper centers primarily on 125 μm multimode glass fibers as this represents the area where significant common progress has been achieved.
