Fiber-optic temperature measurements in galvanic baths

Abstract

Long-time stability and resistance against chemical agression are the main requirements for measuring systems for use in the chemical industry. The advantages of fiber-optic sensing are as follows: (1) optical signals are not affected by EMI; (2) reliable galvanic separation between instrument and sensor make measurements of objects at high potential or currents easy; (3) the dielectric character of the fiber ensures an intrinsically safe measurement system; (4) sensors can be constructed out of nonmetallic material that is resistant to acids and corrosion, highly miniaturized, compact, and of low weight; (5) installation of cabling can be simplified as the optical fibers run along the power transmission cables.
