Fiber-Optic Sensor Array for Underwater Bubble Detection

Abstract

A technique for detecting underwater bubbles has been developed in which underwater bubbles are sensed as they attenuate the optical path in a water-filled gap between two opposed optical fibers. Individual bubble sensors were constructed by epoxying an optical fiber to the forward edge of a thin rounded fiber glass slat and diamond-sawing a 60-mil slot to form the sensor gap. Forty-eight of these sensors were mounted in an array, wherein the sensors were located along the leading edge of a streamlined strut, as pictured in Fig. 1
