Abstract
Optical fibre sensor technology has now evolved to a level where optical fibre sensors are now commercially available. This is particularly true for simple intensity modulating optical fibre sensors and, more recently, the fibre optic gyroscope. The former are generaly available as point sensors, monitoring the parameter of interest at a single location. If measurements are required to be made at a number of locations using optical point sensors, then it becomes desirable to connect these sensors into a simple optical fibre network. The network must be passive if it is to exploit the passive operation of individual sensors (considered to be one of their major advantages).
