Abstract
The measurement of electric currents by optical techniques provides a number of important practical advantages, including effective isolation from high line potentials, and freedom from the saturation effects observed in current transformers. A number of authors (see, for example, [1,2]) have described techniques based on Faraday rotation in monomode optical fibres. A common problem with all such methods is that the Faraday rotation is relatively small, particularly in comparison with other sources of birefringence within the fibre, both intrinsic and extrinsic [3].
