Abstract
The fiber optic gyroscope holds a very specific position in the fiber sensor field. It is based on a purely relativistic problem of clock synchronisation which does not rely on any interaction between light and matter. It is a fascinating example of the strength of the concept of symmetry in physics : reciprocity of light propagation brings perfection to the device, despite the various defects of its components. The final optical design has converged to a great simplicity : all the potential limits, one can have thought of, have been solved through an optimized combination of system architecture and state of the art opto-electronic technologies and specific signal processing techniques.
