ALL-FIBER ACOUSTO-OPTIC PHASE MODULATORS USING ZINC OXIDE FILMS ON GLASS FIBER

Abstract

This project is directed at developing high frequency phase modulators for use in all-fiber sensing and communication systems. These modulators are designed to be spliced directly into single mode fiber systems, as they are constructed with standard single mode glass fiber. They utilize the inherent acousto-optic effect in the glass. This is an alternative to the more usual approach to high frequency phase modulators using the electro-optic effect, which does not exist in glass fiber. This effect requires single crystal material, typically lithium niobate, on which devices are made using planar integrated optics waveguides.
