Abstract

Fused directional couplers can be used to sense changes in index of refraction, temperature, pressure etc. The sensitivity of fused coupler devices to changes in their environment is higher in directional couplers in which many cycles of power transfer occur in the coupling region (overcoupled devices). This paper reports on a method for fabricating low-loss highly overcoupled couplers and on their sensitivity to applied hydrostatic pressure.
