Abstract

Conventionally, an optical fibre gyroscope will use a super-radiant diode as the optical source. However there are many applications where the additional optical power and/or the potential wavelength stability of a laser source are desirable. Therefore, it is of great interest to examine the implications of using a coherent source in more detail, and especially to discuss the impact on coherent backscatter noise and Kerr effect compensation.
