INTERFEROMETRIC OPTICAL FIBER STRAIN SENSOR UNDER BIAXIAL LOADING

Abstract

In the spirit of Butter and Hacker [1], Sirkis and Taylor [2] introduced a new optical fiber strain sensing device. This strain sensor takes advantage of flexible design geometries afforded by optical fibers (Figure 1). In Ref. [2], only uniaxial loading was considered but the results were encouraging. Here, the response of this strain sensor to biaxial loading is investigated. In order for this type of interferometric strain sensor to be useful in a multistrain environment, the strain induced phase change should be a function of one strain component only.
