Abstract

A sensor for the reversible detection of high humidity is presented, based on refractive index changes in a polymer overlay on a side-polished single-mode fibre. The sensor shows excellent repeatability, having a negligible insertion loss above 80% relative humidity and ≈4.4dB loss at 1.55 μm below 80% relative humidity. The sensor is designed for serial installation in a communications network, with interrogation by OTDR.
