Abstract

The design and performance characteristics of an array of high-performance fiber optic accelerometers suited for low-frequency mechanical motion detection is presented. The sensors, based on the flexural disc design, typically have high responsivity (40 dB re rad/g), small mass (less than 60 grams), and a low minimum detectable level at low frequencies (75dBreg/Hzat0.3Hz). An array of these accelerometers has been fabricated to detect ship motions in a 1:24 scale model ship-to-ship cargo transfer operation.
