Widest-Ever Dynamic Range of Brillouin Strain Sensing Using Slimmed Plastic Optical Fibers

Abstract

Conventionally, the maximal detectable strain using Brillouin scattering in plastic optical fibers (POFs) was ~5% (limited by so-called Brillouin-frequency-shift hopping). Here, we show detectability of >25% strain using slimmed POFs with ~3% strain pre-applied.
