Abstract

Long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) were inscribed in an eccentric core single mode fiber (ECF) by a high frequency CO2 laser. The coupled-mode theory is used to analyze the coupling characteristics of the ECF-LPFG. Furthermore, the sensing properties of the LPFG in the ECF, including bending, temperature, and strain have been investigated experimentally. The maximum bending sensitivity 4.997 nm/ m−1 is obtained. The temperature and strain sensitivities of the ECF-LPFG are 59.3 pm/°C within a temperature range of 30°C - 90°C and 0.9 pm/με in the range of 0 με - 938 με.
