Abstract

A method of measuring the refractive index of liquid based on the change of speckle contrast in fiber is presented. The correlation of propagation losses, proportional to the speckle contrast, is used when a section of U-shaped fiber without cladding is submerged in the liquid. The proposed method is easy to perform, simple and low cost, allows quick measurements, with good accuracy and in a large dynamic range.
