Abstract
As a result of the development of new distributed optical fiber strain sensor technology based on Rayleigh scattering, significant improvement in measurement performance has been recently achieved. In this paper, it is reported that major changes have occurred in sensing for civil engineering structures, focusing on cases in construction management. Structural monitoring by optical fiber sensor can contribute to safe and high-quality construction management for tunnels, bridges and so on. Furthermore, the sensor can be later used for long-term monitoring, during maintenance periods through the long lifetime. What is seen here is not the continuous performance improvement such as higher spatial resolution and accuracy, but the discontinuous change given to civil engineering field.
