Optical Finishing Techniques

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

The past history of bowl-feed polishing is addressed – from its origin (before World War II, when it was used for high-speed, high-production work) to its present status. This history includes the shift in emphasis from high-speed, high-production goals to supersmooth-surface goals, a shift which took place in the mid-1960's. Techniques are offered for those opticians/technicians who desire to start using bowl feed. Formulae are given for polishing and blocking pitches.
