Abstract
Modern optical research has led to developments which are dependent on traditional areas of optics. Modern manufacturing techniques for optical fabrication have included the addition of aspheric surfaces and gradient index components. In addition, conventional optical methods can be used to design guided wave optics devices and fiber optics components. Each of these represents a change for the lens designer and introduces an additional complication for the optical fabricator. Each of these topics will be discussed in some detail.
