Optical Coatings From the Users' Point of View

Abstract

A common assumption in the design of optical systems is that coatings do not influence certain optical characteristics, such as image quality. Is it not true that, in most cases, the functional performance and quality of an optical component are measured before coatings are applied? The tacit assumption is that after application of the coating, the optical and mechanical properties are unaltered. Such assumptions are often unwarranted.
