Abstract

I would like to describe the fabrication, testing and coating techniques used at Pennsylvania Optical Company to produce an unusual Optical Component illustrated in Figure 1.

Glass types FD7 or SF7 are required for this component. These materials have moderate stain resistivity. Normal use of this glass type for conventional lens fabrication would probably be relatively trouble free; however, because of the many operations and handling during the coating operations considerable cosmetic problems are encountered. On-going diligence is required to keep quality at an acceptable level. Investigations reveal that pressure, polishing speed and polisher material selection will influence latent scratch control. Considerable studies have been made on this topic by major optical glass manufacturers.
