Abstract

Bright and dark ringlike intensity variations in the out-of-focus images of the Multiple Mirror Telescope have been observed and it has been suggested that this is due to zonal figure variations in the primary mirrors. We present a geometrical optics analysis that accounts for this phenomena. The analysis also yields an equation for the out of focus image brightness variations in terms of the spatial frequency of the zonal error.
