Abstract

Frequency conversion of the Nova laser from 1.053 μm wavelength to the second and third harmonics is accomplished using arrays of KDP (Potassium Dehydrogen Phosphate) crystals. There are 180 crystals, 27 cm2 by 10 mm thick, used in the 10 beam Nova laser. Each beam uses 18 crystals in a 3 by 3 tandem array. KDP crystals are soft, brittle, thermally sensitive, and hydroscopic. All of these factors had to be accounted for throughout the manufacturing cycle.
