Abstract
The principal responsibility of an optical designer is to provide an optical system, on paper, which exceeds a set of requirements. During the design process it has also become increasingly important to desensitize the system to manufacturing errors. Continuation of the desensitization process beyond the paper design can greatly enhance the manufacturability of a system. Insight into the properties of the optical system, developed during the design and sensitivity analysis, can be used to provide important inputs to the processes chosen to fabricate and assemble high performance optical systems.
