Abstract
F. Twyman was the first to observe a stressed layer of glass directly under the ground surface (1905). He also observed that the stress would disappear if the ground layer of glass is polished out. It was A.J. Dalladay (1921) who performed first quantative evaluation of this effect on plate glass.
