Abstract
World-wide attention to reduction of Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS) requires redesigning many optical fabrication processes to eliminate or drastically reduce ODS usage. We will discuss progress toward the goal of the Texas Instruments Optical Fabrication and Coating Facility to be ODS-free by the end of 1994. There are similar pressures to eliminate the mildly radioactive Thorium Fluoride coating material often used when coating infrared optics. We will describe the scope of coating redesign required and the measured results of new Thorium-Free coatings. We will describe the mixed hazardous waste minimization program required to continue repair of customer returns and results of decontaminating our equipment and facilities during 1992.
