Abstract
CNC grinding relies on accurate knowledge of tool position and shape to produce the programmed final workpiece profile. The truing process determines initial tool shape, however changes in profile occur during grinding as a result of tool wear. This can result in figure errors on ground workpieces and, by changing the contact profile, may also alter the process damping in the system. In this report the tool shape change that occurs during contour grinding of glass workpieces is described. A simple model of shape evolution, based on making tool wear proportional to the workpiece volumetric removal occurring at different points on the tool surface, is developed. Predictions of the model compare well with tool profiles measured following contour grinding and may help explain figure errors observed at the center of some contour ground lenses.
