Multi-order Retarders and the Mystery of Retardance Discontinuities

Abstract

Multi-element high-order retarders’ retardance spectra tend to avoid integer numbers of waves of retardance. The Mueller matrix spectrum is continuous, but to unwrap the phase, discontinuities must be introduced. A retardance unwrapping algorithm is developed.
