Abstract
This paper establishes and verifies an efficiency model for improving surface roughness when using laser-assisted diamond turning. In laser-assisted diamond turning, a laser is passed through the diamond tool, reducing the mechanical energy required to remove material. Depending on the machining parameters and toolpath generation, the efficiency of using the laser to reduce the mechanical energy required to cut the surface can greatly vary. This work demonstrates a suitable model can be used to improve surface finish.
