Abstract

Fiber optics is becoming more and more accepted as a media for high data rate communications, particularly where security and susceptibility to interference are important considerations. This paper describes a fiber optically linked multichannel communications system developed to test the feasibility of using fiber optics in a practical system where security and interference are important. This system is a 100 channel optically linked voice intercom. The intercom uses a Time-Division-Multiplexed, Pulse-Width-Modulated, 800 Kilobit per second data format. With this system many of the benefits of a fiber optically linked system have been realized such as the elimination of crosstalk, reflection, ground loops and cable weight; problems which plague coaxial cable or twisted pair 1 inks.
