Abstract

Results of an exact evaluation of the complex characteristic equation for cladded core fibres with a lossy jacket extending to infinity are presented in order to demonstrate the influence of the different design parameters. The additional core mode loss in monomode fibres due to mode conversion in random bends is calculated. For cladded core multimode fibres the mode attenuation is calculated for different ratios of cladding to core radius. Finally, the transmission loss in graded index fibres with lossy jacket is approximately calculated.
