Abstract
Parabolic-index fibers are attractive for optical communication systems because they are less dispersive than comparable stepindex multimode fibers. We present here a near-parabolic index fiber which was prepared with a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique.1,2 The fiber was fabricated by depositing first a borosilicate layer on the inside of commercial fused quartz tubes to prevent impurity diffusion into the core. Subsequently a core layer with varying germania content was deposited, whereby a smooth graded-index distribution was achieved by using many equally thick layers.3 The preform was then collapsed and pulled into a fiber with an electric furnace.
