ACCESS COUPLERS FOR MULTITERMINAL FIBER OPTIC DATA COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

Abstract

Multiterminal fiber optic communication systems are under development for intraplatform use on ships and aircraft. With these systems the various terminals communicate multiplexed data over a common optical path typically one terminal at a time. An electrical failure at any one terminal will not affect the rest of the system. The advantages of optical fibers as to freedom from electromagnetic interference and electrical isolation will be important for this application. The goal is to provide a flexible system where new terminals can be added without extensive rewiring of the platform.
