Abstract
With the dramatic improvements in optical fiber technology, particularly those concerned with low transmission loss and high tensile strength, the number of potentially useful applications of lightwave systems has grown rapidly. As the number of different optical sources, detectors, and fibers grows we find that often there are several ways to design a link, and that ultimately the design rests on a number of engineering trade-offs. Optical data bussing is one where, in many applications, one is content to use a high brightness LED optical source, together with an inexpensive lossy fiber (30-50 dB/кm) or fiber bundle to transmit data to a PIN photodetector at relatively slow rates (< 30 Mb/s) over short distances (< 2000 ft). Thus with available technologies, relatively inexpensive, optical data links can be designed and developed in a fairly short period of time.
