Abstract

Glass is inherently very strong, but due to its susceptibility to physical damage and corrosion by water, long lengths of very strong glass fibers have not been produced until recently. To accomplish this goal, a glass fiber has to be coated with a material which provides adequate protection against corrosion by water and physical damage. Such a coating must meet many other practical requirements in order to be suitable for use in commercial production of optical fibers.
