Abstract
One of the increasingly important areas of optical waveguide performance is their information-carrying capacity. Many systems in which optical waveguides are presently being contemplated will be bandwidth- rather than attenuation-limited. The outlook is optimistic, however, as understanding of the factors affecting bandwidth is very nearly complete and waveguides demonstrating performance close to fundamental limits have been fabricated.
