Abstract

In 1975 Western Electric (WE) of Atlanta developed equipment suitable for fabricating production quantities of optical fibers. This included glass lathes to produce the preforms, and a drawing machine with in-line coating for pulling these preforms into multikilometer length low-loss graded index optical fibers.
