Abstract

Many years ago Wiener, in a classical wave optics experiment, demonstrated the presence of standing waves upon reflection of monochromatic light from a polished metallic surface. That similar phenomena can be demonstrated at wavelengths four orders of magnitude lower in the x-ray range is less well known. Using the appropriate geometry and detectors the presence of x-ray standing wavefields can be directly demonstrated. For x-rays the standing wavefield is not fixed but can be moved. This attribute allows accurate atom location studies at or near crystal surfaces.
