Abstract
Vanadium dioxide undergoes a thermally induced, first-order phase transition from semiconductor to metal near 67°C. It has been investigated in thin-film form for a number of applications1 as a material that can be switched between two optical states using laser2 and electron beam3 sources. Unfortunately, requirements on optical performance often preclude a simple structure of thin-film vanadium dioxide deposited on a massive substrate.
