Diffractive Optics Using Artificial Index Modulation

Abstract

An artificial dielectric is an array of dielectric objects spaced so closely together that for sufficiently long wavelengths, it behaves as a homogeneous film, i.e., no diffraction or scattering occurs. By proper design, the principal indices of the artificial dielectric can be tailored to suit specific needs. For example, using vertical artificial index modulation, broadband antireflection structures are produced[1]. In this paper, we will be concerned with the fabrication of high-performance diffractive optical elements such as deflector gratings and Fresnel lenses using lateral artificial index modulation.
