Control of sub-nm spacing of gold nanoparticle dimers and wide-range tunability of localized surface plasmon resonance

Abstract

Toward near-infrared high-color-contrast bioimaging, we developed a method to form Au nanoparticle (AuNP) dimers based on the surface modification of AuNP with a self- assembled monolayer (SAM), as an alternative candidate of gold nanorod (AuNR), which is covered with a toxic CTAB bilayer. Tailoring of the chain length of alcanethiol SAM enables highly controllable and sub-1 nm spacing between AuNPs, and thereby wide-range tunability of localized surface plasmon resonance.
