Abstract
An ordinary crossbar is a two-dimensional array of N2 binary switches. N input channels communicate in any configuration with N output channels. It has been suggested before to implement the N channels as an one-dimensional array of parallel light rays, and to implement the binary switches by polarising beam-splitters and electro-optical half-wave plates. Each of the rays may be subdivided into several pixel channels in order to exploit fully the inherent parallelism of free-space optics.
