Abstract

This paper describes the structure and mechanisms of the convective roll vortices seen by airborne lidar scattering from sea salt aerosols and measured directly by instruments on another aircraft. The observations were taken off the east coast during a cold air outbreak. In addition, we discuss the ways in which the lidar may be used to estimate some of the key parameters related to the surface heat flux. Much of what follows is based upon the work of Chou and Atlas, 1982; Melfi et al, 1984; and Atlas, 1985.
