Abstract
Since 1984 the Jet Propulsion Laboratory has been developing a heterodyne-detection pulsed CO2 lidar instrument for airborne deployment aboard the NASA DC8 research aircraft during the NASA GLOBE (Global Backscatter Experiment) campaigns scheduled for the Fall of 1989 and Spring of 1990. The GLOBE program essentially comprises a survey of tropospheric aerosol information in remote marine environments, this to assess worst-case background scenarios in support of the Laser Atmospheric Wind Sounder (LAWS) intended for launch in the late 1990s as part of the International Space Station/Earth Observing System concept.
