Abstract

The detection, amplification, and filtering of signals by lidar detector systems and subsequent data processing modify the characteristics of true atmospheric lidar signal returns. These influences can lead to significant changes in the shape of atmospheric concentration profiles calculated using the Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) technique in regions of large aerosol gradients. This paper discusses the sensitivity of these influences in the measurement of water vapor (H2O) by an airborne or spaceborne DIAL system operating in a nadir viewing configuration.
